Year 3 had a fantastic day stepping back in time at Richborough Roman Fort in Sandwich. Supporting our History learning about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain, the children explored a range of primary and secondary sources, including Roman pots, coins and hairpins, developing their skills as young historians by asking questions and using evidence to find out about the past.
The children enjoyed recreating a monument that would have been the focal point of the settlement and learning about the formation of Richborough, including the remarkable journey marble took across the Roman Empire to reach Britain. After lunch, they took part in a guided tour of the site, where they deepened their understanding of how people’s lives have shaped Britain and how the Romans influenced life in this country. They were fascinated by the different coloured stones in the walls, the pilae stacks used in the Romans’ underfloor heating system, and the impressive scale of the fort. The views from the Roman Gate helped them appreciate the site’s strategic importance and significance within Roman Britain.
It was a wonderful day of enquiry, discovery and hands-on learning, bringing to life our Year 3 curriculum study of the Romans while helping children understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources. 🏛️
