This week, Holly and Ash Class were terrific designers in PSHE! Year 3 worked thoughtfully and collaboratively to explore the idea of stereotypes and the assumptions that people can make about gender, interests and roles within families. We discussed how stereotypes can sometimes lead to misconceptions and how everyone is unique, regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl.
To put their learning into action, the children were challenged to design a duvet cover based on what they thought the opposite gender might like. The boys designed duvet covers for the girls, and the girls designed duvet covers for the boys. There were some fantastic and creative designs, featuring a wide range of colours, patterns, hobbies and interests.
Following the activity, we had a lovely class discussion about the choices that had been made and whether they reflected reality or stereotypes. The children listened respectfully to one another’s ideas and shared their own views with maturity and confidence.
We were incredibly impressed by the children’s creativity, teamwork and thoughtful reflections throughout the lesson. Well done, Year 3, for approaching this topic with such enthusiasm and open-mindedness!
