Music in Sycamore

Year 4 Sycamore had a wonderfully musical week as they deepened their understanding of key concepts in music. Our learning objective was to explore ostinato and riff, recognising how repeating patterns and short melodic ideas can be used to build energy, structure and excitement within a song.
The children listened to examples, identified these features in different pieces of music, and experimented with creating their own simple ostinatos using voice and body percussion. They showed great enthusiasm and creativity as they discovered how these musical building blocks work.
We also learnt the lyrics to “Let’s Dance” and practised performing the song together. The class worked on singing with confidence, keeping a steady beat, and listening carefully to one another so their performance felt united and expressive. It was a joy to see them apply their new knowledge of ostinato and riff while singing.
