Yew-reception

This week, the children dived into the colourful underwater world of Hooray for Fish!

They were captivated by the vibrant illustrations and enjoyed exploring the many different fish characters, using the story as a springboard for rich learning across the curriculum.
Through shared reading and discussion, children developed their communication and language skills by describing the fish using new vocabulary such as stripey, spotty, wavy, and twisty. They listened carefully to each other’s ideas and built confidence in expressing their own thoughts.
In expressive arts, children created their own imaginative fish using collage materials, developing fine motor skills and showing increasing control when cutting, sticking, and selecting resources. Many children chose to label their fish, applying their phonics knowledge to segment and write simple words.
During maths sessions, we explored pattern by looking closely at the designs on the fish. Children created repeating patterns using colours, shapes, and natural materials, demonstrating growing confidence in noticing and continuing patterns.
In the water area, children engaged in small‑world play, developing personal, social and emotional skills as they collaborated, shared resources, and built imaginative underwater stories together.
The week ended with a joyful retelling of the story, showing how much the children have grown in their ability to recall, sequence, and use story language.
