As part of their Science learning, the children explored different groups of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They learned to identify and name a variety of common animals and began to recognise that animals can be grouped based on their features. The children discussed the basic body parts that animals have, such as heads, bodies, legs, tails and wings, and talked about how these can be similar or different.
They used simple scientific vocabulary to describe what they could see and to compare animals, for example noting differences in how animals move, where they live and what their bodies are like.
As part of a creative activity, the children designed their own imaginary animals by choosing and combining different animal body parts. They drew and labelled their creations and talked about their ideas, explaining why they had chosen certain features.
This led to lots of discussion, with children sharing their thoughts, asking questions and making simple comparisons between animals.
