Chinese calligraphy in Sycamore

As part of our Culture Week celebrations, Year 4 Sycamore have been exploring the rich traditions of China, with a special focus on the beautiful art of Chinese calligraphy.

Through this learning, the children developed and refined a range of skills, including research, observation, and cultural understanding, as they explored how their own names could be represented using Chinese characters. They learned about the history and symbolism behind this ancient writing style, building their knowledge and appreciation of different traditions.

Using black ink and fine brushes, the children practised and improved their fine motor control, precision, and hand–eye coordination through careful brushstrokes. They also demonstrated patience, concentration, and creativity as they refined their techniques and produced their final calligraphy pieces with great care and pride.
