Scientist in Sycamore

Year 4 Sycamore have been learning about electrical conductors and insulators as part of their science work on electricity. The children explored how electricity travels through different materials by investigating the structure of electrical wires.

Using wire cutters safely and with adult supervision, they carefully removed the plastic coating to observe the materials inside. They identified the metal core as the conductor, which allows electricity to pass through, and the plastic outer layer as an insulator, which helps to keep us safe by preventing electric shocks.

The class thoroughly enjoyed this practical investigation and demonstrated excellent scientific skills, including observing, questioning and identifying how different materials are used for specific purposes. Their curiosity and focus helped them develop a deeper understanding of how electricity works in everyday objects.
