Planting seeds in Hazel Class

In Science this week, Year 1 and 2 pupils developed their understanding of plants by identifying and describing what plants need to grow and stay healthy (including water, light, air and suitable temperature). The children planted cress seeds, learning how seeds are sown and cared for, and began to understand that plants grow from seeds and need specific conditions to thrive.

They will continue to observe and describe changes over time as their seeds germinate and grow, recording what they notice and using simple scientific language. This supports the development of key working scientifically skills, including observing closely, using simple equipment, and gathering evidence through first-hand experience.

The children showed great enthusiasm in taking part in this practical investigation and are beginning to understand their role in caring for living things as they work together to develop a small class garden.
