This week in Year 2, we took our maths learning outside to make it active and engaging. As part of our work on fractions, the children developed their understanding of halves, quarters and thirds, focusing particularly on finding one half of a number.
Working collaboratively, the children used arrays and practical resources to represent half of different numbers, including successfully showing half of 18. This supported their Year 2 learning about recognising fractions as equal parts of a whole and linking fractions to multiplication and division.
There was lots of purposeful mathematical talk as the children explained their reasoning, justified their choices and supported one another’s learning. This hands‑on approach helped to deepen their understanding of fractions while building confidence in problem solving, reasoning and working collaboratively, all key Year 2 maths skills.
