Year 5 had a great afternoon exploring Ancient Greek architecture, linking to our History learning about Ancient Greece and its influence on the Western world. We examined the materials used in Ancient Greek buildings and discussed the purpose and importance of columns in temple design.
We went on to identify and compare the three main types of Greek columns – Doric, Ionic and Corinthian – developing our understanding of architectural styles and their significance. This learning also supported the Art and Design curriculum, as children explored how architecture reflects design, structure and decoration.
To showcase our knowledge, we used Minecraft Education, applying our Computing skills to design and build our own Greek temples. Working collaboratively, children planned, built and evaluated their designs, and added signs to explain the key architectural features of their buildings. This activity demonstrated excellent teamwork, creativity and problem-solving, while also using technology purposefully to create digital content.
Great work, Year 5 🏛️🏛️
