This week in Cherry Class, the children have been exploring their emotions through the story The Colour Monster. By linking colours to different feelings, the children were supported in recognising and naming their own emotions, which aligns closely with Personal, Social and Emotional Development in Nursery Development Matters. They practised expressing their individual feelings to one another, developing confidence in sharing their thoughts and beginning to understand that others may feel differently.
Together, we talked about how each emotion feels in our bodies, building early self‑regulation skills. We also learned the Makaton signs for key emotions, helping children to communicate their feelings even when they may not yet have the vocabulary—supporting Communication and Language.
At the start of the week, the children created their own ‘confused, mixed‑up monster’, and by the end they were confidently making individual coloured emotion monsters inspired by the story. These creative experiences encouraged imagination, fine motor development, and early Expressive Arts and Design skills.
The children also enjoyed using the climbing frame, where they practised climbing, balancing, and moving with increasing control. This supported their Physical Development, particularly gross motor skills.
As it was National Oral Hygiene Week, the children explored a range of tooth‑brushing activities and learned why looking after their teeth is important. This linked to Understanding the World and Health and Self‑Care, helping them build early healthy‑habits awareness.
A wonderful week of learning, exploring, and expressing!
