Debate in Sycamore class

This morning, Year 4 Sycamore explored The King Who Banned the Dark to support their spoken language and writing objectives. Pupils worked in groups to develop arguments for and against the question “Why is darkness important?”, strengthening the curriculum focus on expressing opinions, participating in discussions, and responding to others’ ideas confidently.

They then took part in a class debate, demonstrating key Lower KS2 skills such as building on others’ viewpoints and using topic‑specific vocabulary.

This activity also prepares pupils for writing explanation texts, a Year 4 expectation that includes organising ideas logically, selecting precise vocabulary, and writing with clear purpose and audience.

The debate has equipped pupils with strong, well‑reasoned ideas that they will now apply in their written work later this week.
