The children in Hazel Class thoroughly enjoyed the activities during Book Week, especially the dress‑up day. They listened to a story about crayons going on strike and used their reading skills to discuss the characters’ feelings, make simple inferences, and talk about why the crayons might have acted as they did. Afterwards, they made bookmarks to apologise to the crayons, drawing on their understanding of story structure and character motivation.
The children also created their own rewritten versions of our set text Leaf, presenting them as illustrated booklets. This supported key reading and writing knowledge, including retelling narratives, sequencing events, using story language, and building vocabulary drawn from familiar texts.
Dress‑up day was a real highlight of the week, with many amazing characters on display and lots of opportunities for the children to talk about books they enjoy, recommend stories to friends, and engage with texts in a meaningful, imaginative way.
