As part of our exciting World Book Week celebrations, the children in Year 4 Sycamore Class have been busy unleashing their creativity and love of reading. Each child selected a favourite book and brought a scene from its pages to life by designing and decorating their very own story shoebox. The classroom has become a vibrant gallery of imagination, filled with colour, detail and wonderfully inventive interpretations of much‑loved stories.
This project closely supports Year 4 Reading National Curriculum expectations, particularly those requiring pupils to listen to and discuss a wide range of fiction, increase their familiarity with different types of books including fairy stories, myths and legends, and identify themes and conventions across texts. As children recreated scenes from their chosen books, they also practised discussing words and phrases that capture the reader’s interest, checking that texts make sense to them, and explaining the meaning of words in context
By thinking deeply about the stories they love and presenting their ideas creatively, pupils also engaged in the curriculum expectation to participate in discussions about books, expressing opinions and listening to the ideas of others.
We are incredibly proud of their hard work, imagination, and the enthusiasm they have poured into every shoebox masterpiece.
