During Reading Week, our Year 4 Sycamore pupils enjoyed a wonderful buddy reading session with the Cherry Class in nursery. The older children showed great care and enthusiasm as they shared stories, and the younger pupils were delighted to read alongside their Year 4 buddies.
The session also supported key Year 4 National Curriculum reading aims, as pupils read aloud with increasing fluency, used expression to engage their partners, and explained events and vocabulary to check understanding. It naturally reinforced their VIPERS skills too: clarifying new vocabulary, making inferences from pictures and text, predicting what might happen next, retrieving key details, and sequencing events to help the younger children follow the story.
This joyful collaboration not only celebrated a love of reading but also gave our Year 4 pupils a meaningful opportunity to apply essential reading skills in a real and purposeful context.
