Year 5 have been developing their poetry skills by exploring a range of poetic devices, including similes, personification, alliteration, hyperbole and onomatopoeia.
To warm up, pupils played a game where everyone shared an example of each device, helping them build confidence in recognising and using figurative language. They then became poetry detectives, searching through their poems to identify where each device had been used and discussing how these choices shaped the poem’s meaning. Next, they explored how these devices affected the speed, mood, and overall atmosphere of the poems, deepening their understanding of how writers create impact.
To finish, pupils worked in small groups to perform their poems, using expression, tone and pace to bring the words to life.
