Reading maps in Sycamore

Year 4 Sycamore have been strengthening their map-reading and geographical interpretation skills by learning how to read contour lines and understand Ordnance Survey (OS) maps.

The children explored how contour line patterns show the shape, height and features of the land, helping them recognise where hills, slopes and valleys are located. They practised interpreting changes in elevation and learnt how these patterns represent the physical landscape.

Using local Ordnance Survey maps, the class investigated the geography of the Ashford area, identifying nearby hills and comparing their elevations. They examined how closely spaced contour lines reveal steep ground, while wider spacing shows gentle slopes, developing their confidence in interpreting real-world landscapes from maps.

A fantastic step forward in developing their mapping, observation and geographical enquiry skills!
